Many of you must be familiar with QuizUp. QuizUp was a unique trivia game app in line with Trivia Crack and Trivia Crack 2. The game was successful, until it wasn’t. The developers failed to adjust to the times we live in and monetize the game. The lack of ads created an excellent gaming experience, which was ruined by the lack of app maintenance. The developers couldn’t invest any money into maintenance because they weren’t making any, thus leaving the app to die.Â
The founder of QuizUp must have thought it was a lost cause, so he didn’t try to save the app. At the same time, he came up with a new venture that came to replace the outdated game. Trivia Royale was the new game that came in the place of QuizUp. That didn’t last long either. The app was shut down earlier this year. Keep reading to find out why that happened and let us answer all of your questions about Trivia Royale.
What Happened to Trivia Royale?
Trivia Royale came to replace QuizUp, but it fell off as quickly as it rose to fame. The game is no longer available for download and there is a simple reason behind it. The app (and the company behind it) was not making enough money to stay afloat. Thor Fridriksson shared that he and his fellow developers decided to shut down all operations seven months ago. Now that you have a better idea of what happened to Trivia Royale, let’s see what kind of game it was!
What is Trivia Royale?
Trivia Royale was a trivia game app created by Thor Fridriksson, the developer of QuizUp. QuizUp did not turn out to be a total disaster, as Fridriksson was able to sell his enterprise to GluMobile for over $7 million. A few years ago, he was onto better and bigger things, or so he hoped.
Trivia Royale was quite different from QuizUp in one major way: it was a game in the style of Battle Royale. 1,000 random players go head-to-head in a massive trivia battle. The last man or woman standing wins. Of course, players who would prefer to play regular one-on-one trivia games could do that too. Like in QuizUp, Trivia Royale allowed players to pick the category, and compete against friends and strangers. However, the Battle Royale, trivia-style is what made the game so unique.
If you won a game of Trivia Royale, you got a special crown that was displayed on your avatar in the game. You also got access to the exclusive Royale Lounge, where you could get to know other winners and check out the game’s leaderboard.
Who Created Trivia Royale?
Thor Fridriksson is the developer behind Trivia Royale. The Icelandic developer first gained popularity with his successful trivia game app QuizUp. He successfully sold his company Plain Vanilla Games and started a new enterprise. When Trivia Royale came out, Fridriksson was operating under TeaTime Games.
What Age Was Trivia Royale For?
Officially, Trivia Royale was suitable for everyone from the age of 13. The game was not meant for young children, so a lot of adults played it too. If you ever played Trivia Royale, you might have met a bunch of teenagers on the app. Seasoned trivia players might have found the game a bit boring. Much like QuizUp, Trivia Crack, and other similar trivia game apps, Trivia Royale was perfect for casual players and beginners.
Was it a Hard Game?
The game wasn’t very difficult or too easy. It had a good mix of questions ranging from easy to hard, and it maintained a good balance. Despite some questions being on the easier side, winning the Battle Royale was a challenge. The title of winner wasn’t just given to anyone. Users have reported that the challenge element was also a downside to some extent. Because it was so hard to win the game, many players got discouraged. This especially goes for kids and teenagers who need to stay motivated and engaged to keep playing.
Could You Win Money in Trivia Royale?
No, Trivia Royale did not offer real cash prizes to its players. Other apps like HQ Trivia have tried it and failed, so Trivia Royale didn’t even give it a chance. You could only win coins that would allow you to buy power ups later on in the game. No real money was involved. However, there are still a few trivia apps out there that do offer real-world cash prizes.
Was Trivia Royale Really Multiplayer?
There were many theories regarding Trivia Royale and whether or not it was really an online multiplayer game. A Reddit user shared his experience one year ago. They said that they tried playing the game offline (on airplane mode) and it worked just fine, which led them to believe the game was not online after all. Other players suggested that the games could be played against a computer or be “pre-recorded” from earlier games.
Someone mentioned that Trivia Royale allowed users to add friends and play with them, so there must have been some multiplayer aspect to the game. Many players agreed that the game must have had some bots, but there is no real way to confirm that now. Did You Play Against Real People or Bots?
Trivia Royale allowed users to play against their friends. If you had a group of friends on the app, you could play against each other in smaller games. However, when it came to the Battle Royale, players didn’t really have a choice of who they wanted to play against. At some point, users started reporting seeing what they described as bots. In other words, several users said they kept playing against the exact same users in multiple games, which seemed highly improbable.
One person said that whenever they chatted with another player in the game, their responses seemed generic and pre-recorded. The general consensus seems to be that there were some real players mixed with bots. The truth is, you didn’t really need 1,000 players competing at the same time to participate in the game. You only needed one opponent for the 10 rounds of questions, and that seems manageable. Unfortunately, it is too late to test these theories and conduct research to find out if the game had bots.
Is Trivia Royale on the Play Store?
Trivia Royale was available on the Play Store, but it’s not anymore. Since the developers shut the app down, it hasn’t been available for download. The only thing we can do right now is hope that Thor Fridriksson comes out with an even better trivia app that will blow all the other trivia games out of the water!
Final Words
Trivia Royale is gone, but we haven’t lost hope! The concept of a Battle Royale trivia-style was not a bad one. Once again, the developer behind QuizUp failed to monetize his idea. We’re hoping that soon enough there will be another trivia game for us to play. Thor should just redesign QuizUp and this time try and monetise it within reason. Many ex-players would pay a fee to have the app back. Not a single trivia app comes remotely close to QU in any way of form.
Hope a resurrection happens.

I completely agree. I’m almost to the point where I want to start a petition on change.org! That was a lot of work for the people who made all the questions to go along with the 1200+ topics. We need quiz up.
