A virtual alternative is a great bet if you’re seeking the thrill of an at-home trivia night without having to go to the trouble of setting up a game board (or maybe even having your friends over). Specifically, some great game options exist if you own an Xbox. And what better game to play than the most iconic trivia game of all time, Trivial Pursuit?
In this article, we’ll go through every version of Trivial Pursuit for the Xbox—all five of them, to be exact. Whether you’re playing on a vintage Xbox 360, or you’ve got the newest model from the Xbox Series X, we’ve highlighted the best game for you. We’ll talk about general gameplay for each of the Trivial Pursuit versions listed and their pros and cons. What makes each game different from one another? You’re about to find out.
Please note that more than one of the games we’ll discuss in this article is no longer produced by Xbox. However, they are available for secondhand purchase on various websites, including eBay, GameStop, and Amazon. Supply may vary, so keep checking back if you cannot find the game you like.
We’ve kept you waiting long enough! Without further ado, here are all five versions of Trivial Pursuit for the Xbox.
Trivial Pursuit LIVE! (2015)
Trivial Pursuit LIVE! puts a Jeopardy!-esque spin on the classic trivia game. Instead of playing as though you’re using a physical board game, Trivial Pursuit LIVE! gives you the chance to portray an avatar on a game show, complete with a podium and a big screen. This fun twist keeps the game fresh while adding an extra element of competitiveness—the stakes are high on a game show, after all!
Trivial Pursuit LIVE! is rated E for everyone. It is intended for two to four players, so find a buddy, and get to playing!
Before each game, you must determine whether you’d prefer to play three or five rounds. You must also select your avatar from various figures with fun costumes and assign them a name to begin. Give any fellow players a chance to do the same, as well. Then, gameplay can start. Questions will appear on the screen individually, and players will have limited time to answer each one. The correct answer will be displayed once the time is up, and from there, points will be distributed to each player.
The graphics for Trivial Pursuit LIVE! resemble a whimsical, techno Wheel of Fortune. An enormous wheel with six “pie slices” to represent the six different trivia categories (sports and leisure, entertainment, geography, history, science and nature, and arts and literature) is the centerpiece of the virtual set, and the icon for the chosen category is seemingly projected into the air in front of the avatars and their podiums. It’ll look like you’re watching an otherworldly, animated game show as you play!
There are five possible round types that you could be assigned during a given game. These round types are Quickstarter, Grab Bag, Switchagories, Close Call, and Rapid Fire. In a Quickstarter round, four questions will be from one category, while the remaining one will be from a separate category. In a Grab Bag round, you’ll be served up four questions with eight correct answers; a player will have to pick out those eight from an answer bank of sixteen to earn a point. During Switchagories, the category will switch every time between each question, with no repeats, while during a Close Call round, you’ll have to pick the best answer out of a bank of all correct answers for each of five questions. The final round in each five-round game is a Rapid Fire round, you’ll quickly answer multiple-choice questions that only have two answer choices apiece. Sounds fun, right? We think so, too.
Questions are sometimes multiple choice and can often be fill-in-the-blank, i.e., “ ____ is Benvolio’s best friend.” Certain questions will incorporate a visual element, i.e., “What species of deer, shown here, is the only one in which both males and females grow antlers?”. Others (specifically in a Grab Bag round) will have multiple correct answers and will provide an enormous word bank from which to check all answers that apply. With so many varied question formats, there’s no getting bored with Trivial Pursuit LIVE!
As you come back to play Trivial Pursuit LIVE! time after time, you can earn different medals, such as “Pop Goes Perfection” (for answering every question in all rounds correctly), “Around the World in 80 Plays” (for answering 50 cumulative questions correctly in the geography category), or “A Noble Pursuit” (for earning a Trivia Rating of 100). These fun incentives make it easy to want to return to the game whenever you’ve hankered for some trivia.
Using the multiplayer capabilities of Trivial Pursuit LIVE!, you can play with friends or family all on one local device or online using different devices. You’ll need a subscription to Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to play online with faraway folks. We love these flexible options for group gameplay that allow you to play with those both near and far!
Trivial Pursuit LIVE! was released by Ubisoft+ on February 16, 2015. If you’ve got an Ubisoft+ membership, you can play it for free via the Trivial Pursuit app. Otherwise, you’ll have to purchase the game by itself. You can play it on an Xbox One or on the Xbox Series X/S.
Trivial Pursuit LIVE! 2 (2022)
In a similar vein, we’ve got Trivial Pursuit LIVE! 2. Released on March 16, 2022, this game builds upon the foundation set by Trivial Pursuit LIVE! While the two games are comparable, we at Trivia Bliss think that Trivial Pursuit LIVE! 2 gets a leg up on the original by expanding upon its most popular aspects. With over 5000 new questions, Trivial Pursuit LIVE! 2 should be your number one pick for a Trivial Pursuit Xbox game.
In addition to featuring all new questions so that fans of Trivial Pursuit LIVE! won’t get bored, Trivial Pursuit LIVE! 2 also offers family-friendly questions so that younger trivia fanatics can have a chance to shine. It also offers two gaming modes: Classic and 2v2. In a 2v2 game, four players form two teams and compete in an extra fast-paced version of Trivial Pursuit.
Trivial Pursuit LIVE! 2 features a wider variety of avatars than the original version, so you can find one that matches your style or preferred look to stand up at that virtual podium. It also expands upon the original by offering different difficulty levels, one for the newer trivia fan and the other for an experienced Trivial Pursuit player.
Example Trivial Pursuit LIVE! 2 questions include “In which country can you find the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge?”, “Which of these ingredients are used in a traditional moussaka?”, “___ repelled an English attempt to conquer France during the Hundred Years’ War,” and “What is the name of the talking cat in the TV series Sabrina the Teenage Witch?”. This game features the same round types as the OG Trivial Pursuit LIVE! You will try out various question types from all six possible categories.
Another new and notable feature: Trivial Pursuit LIVE! 2 allows players to stream their game on Twitch. Ubisoft+ really knows their audience, huh?
Like its predecessor, Trivial Pursuit LIVE! 2 is rated E for everyone. It’s playable on an Xbox One and the Xbox Series X/S.
Hasbro Family Fun Pack: 4 Great Games in 1 (2015)
Next on our list of Trivial Pursuit options for Xbox, we have the Hasbro Family Fun Pack. This game is a little different than the ones we’ve listed previously because it doesn’t just feature one game option. Not only do you have access to Trivial Pursuit LIVE! with the Hasbro Family Fun Pack, but you also obtain the ability to play Risk, Scrabble, and Monopoly Plus. That sure makes for a lot of family fun waiting to be had!
Released the same year as Trivial Pursuit LIVE!, this game pack contains the same version of the game as we described at the start of this article—it just so happens to be paired with three other excellent games. You can access other virtual versions of game board favorites for little to no extra cost. We love to see it!
We especially love the Monopoly Plus that’s included in the game pack. It features a 3-D, larger-than-life-sized Monopoly board that makes you feel like you’re walking the streets as you purchase properties and railroads.
The Hasbro Family Fun Pack is made for the Xbox One. It came out on October 20, 2015, and is rated E10 for everyone ages 10 and up.
- GREAT VALUE - Four classic titles in one bundle, providing hours of entertainment
- Play the Monopoly you know and love set in a beautiful 3D world - watch the board come to life
- RISK - Compete with players from around the world in this classic game of global domination.
- TRIVIAL PURSUIT Live - Featuring unique question formats and diverse rounds - it's never been so fun for everyone.
- Scrabble - Challenge opponents in person or online, and test your word skills with new game modes
Trivial Pursuit Xbox 360 (2009)
Now, we’re venturing back into the early aughts. Specifically, to March 10, 2009, when Trivial Pursuit Xbox 360 was released.
This is your standard, plain Jane Trivial Pursuit, just made into a video game. It features a basic animated game board, exactly like the one you’d play with in real life. Players move around the board to answer trivia questions from each of six categories, competing to earn colored wedges. When a player has gained a wedge of every color, they may travel back to the center of the board to answer a final, random question. This question determines whether they win the game.
One intriguing part of Trivial Pursuit for the Xbox 360 is its Wedge Offs. In a Wedge Off, two players who have earned enough points to obtain one of the coveted colored category pie pieces go head-to-head to determine who will gain custody of said pie piece. This adds an extra element of competition to an already competitive video game.
Because this game is older, it’s going to take a little longer to play. For example, the animations featured in Trivial Pursuit Xbox 360 are on the rudimentary side, so moving one’s piece around the board may take more time than a transition in a newer game. Additionally, this game may take longer to load due to the age of the gaming system it is being played on. The Xbox 360 has been out for 18 years, after all!
As its name suggests, Trivial Pursuit Xbox 360 is only compatible with the Xbox 360. It is rated E for everyone. While it’s harder to find today, you can purchase it secondhand online to play with your old gaming system.
- New question categories and all new questions with each turn.
- Challenge your friends with the original Trivial Pursuit game.
- Earn extra points by guessing whether your friends know the answer in Facts & Friends mode.
- Track your best categories over time with your customer Trivial Pursuit profile.
- Trivial Puruit finally played your way.
Trivial Pursuit Unhinged (2004)
Last on our list of Trivial Pursuit Xbox games is Trivial Pursuit Unhinged. This iconic game was released on March 26, 2004—feel old yet? The word “unhinged” has cemented itself into the slang vernacular of teens everywhere in the past few years, so the developers of this game must have been ahead of the curve.
Trivial Pursuit Unhinged has three main game modes: Classic Mode, Unhinged Mode, and Flash. Classic Mode is your standard Trivial Pursuit. You go around the virtual game board as you would during regular gameplay. Players compete to obtain each of sic pie pieces to represent the six trivia categories and must answer one final, random question to earn a win.
As the game’s title suggests, Unhinged Mode is the moneymaker here. It takes the basic rules for Trivial Pursuit and twists them into a much more exciting format. If you’ve ever wanted to incorporate betting into your Trivial Pursuit game, now is your chance!
Specifically, Unhinged Mode in Trivial Pursuit Unhinged allows players to bet on the progress of their fellow players. It also gives certain powerups and drawbacks to various spaces around the animated game board. For example, the Teleport powerup lets players move their game piece to wherever they desire on the game board, and the Rotate powerup makes the game board spin, giving every player a new spot on the board (and a new question to answer).
Need a hint in Unhinged Mode? Use the 50/50 function, which gets rid of two of the three incorrect multiple-choice answers, leaving you with a much easier choice to make in order to deduce the correct one. Additionally, the Recycle function can also give you a leg up by letting you swap out your question for a different one that might suit your areas of interest better. As you can probably tell, Unhinged Mode is an excellent way to shake up a ho-hum trivia game. Back in the day, it was an ideal play.
Lastly, Flash allows Trivial Pursuit Unhinged players to play one on one, player vs. player. This gave those without large families or big groups of friends the opportunity to play, or for those who just wanted a quick trivia jaunt to get their fill. In Flash, two players climb an animated tower as they answer trivia questions correctly to vie for the top spot.
This game was released for the original Xbox, so it’s been rendered virtually obsolete. However, if you’re willing to contend with slow response times and dated graphics, it can be a good old-fashioned blast from the past.
