Everybody knows Ken Jennings through the prism of his successful career on Jeopardy! He started as a regular contestant and quickly became one of the most successful players in the show’s history, beating many existing records and setting new ones. After his amazing streak, Jennings went on to host the very show he dominated!
It’s almost as though he’s always been on Jeopardy! He was born to be on the show in some capacity, that’s for sure. But who is Ken Jennings outside of his career as both host and contestant? What did he do before Jeopardy!? What does he do now? Let’s find out!
Author
As with many successful media personalities, Ken Jennings took to writing books after the end of his Jeopardy streak. He did well, too, and became a best-selling author! His book Brainiac discusses the mysterious world of trivia in America.
Ken Jennings’s Trivia Almanac is North America’s biggest trivia book ever published.
He also channeled his lifelong passion for geography into writing a book called Maphead.
Being a father of two, Jennings then went on to author a book for all parents called Because I Said So!. The book focuses on parenting cliches and debunking popular myths in that sphere.
His children’s book series Junior Genius Guides is filled with trivia tidbits and fun facts.
It is safe to say that writing books has been another journey of success for Jennings so far.
Appearances
After his success on Jeopardy!, Jennings took to making public appearances. He often talks about the importance of education today. He likes to discuss another passion of his, too—maps and geography. He has been asked to participate in private quizzes and trivia nights, sometimes as host.
Anyone can book Ken Jennings for their event—if he agrees, of course! You can reach out to him through the American Program Bureau. All information can be found on his website. Jennings had several appearances in the summer of 2023 in cities such as Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Portland.
Blog
It seems that Ken Jennings had a blog at some point but hasn’t tended to it in a while. The last post is dated July 29, 2018. In his blog, Jennings wrote about his favorite topics—trivia and jokes. He spoke a lot about his projects Planet Funny and Omnibus (more on that in a bit!).
It is not clear why Jennings stopped updating his blog. Perhaps he never managed to monetize it to the extent he wanted, thus never turning it into a source of income. These are just speculations, and we don’t actually know why Jennings stopped blogging.
Podcast
Ken Jennings is the co-host of the podcast titled Omnibus. The podcast describes itself as “an encyclopedic reference of strange-but-true stories compiled as a time capsule for future generations.”
Ken and his co-host John Roderick—musician, author, and politician—release episodes twice a week. They talk about strange phenomena that concern biology, geography, history, science, and sociology. For Jennings, this is perhaps another way to share his love of trivia with the world.
Quiz
To put his trivia expertise to good use, Jennings created his own weekly trivia quiz for Mental Floss. The quiz is called Kennections, and you will make the connection in a second.
The rules of the game are simple: you must answer five trivia questions, as compiled by Ken Jennings himself. You get to see the number of characters each answer has, which can be a huge help. Once you’ve done that, find what all five answers have in common. Make the Kennection, if you will! The game is quick, relatively easy, and very fun.
Board game
In October 2019, Richard Garfield, Ken Jennings, and Ian O’Toole released a board game titled Half Truth. Jennings teamed up with successful graphic designers and illustrators to give the world what it needs—more trivia! Half Truth is special because it’s a game for everyone; the team worked hard to create a game anyone can enjoy.
The questions aren’t necessarily meant to trigger your knowledge of certain trivia facts, but the hints help. Players are meant to be able to figure out what the answer should be based on clues. The questions are multiple-choice, with three correct answers and three incorrect ones. You can deduce which answers are incorrect by elimination, thus finding the right ones. Every player participates in every question so that nobody will be bored.
The game received favorable reviews from famous publications like Forbes, The Hollywood Reporter, and more. Though the game has hardly become a staple, the premise is interesting, and Half Truth has lots of room to grow!
What Was Ken Jennings’s Old Job?
When Ken Jennings was first called up on that famous stage, he was working as a software engineer at a health care staffing company in Salt Lake City. However, that day in 2004 changed his fate forever and Jennings was soon able to quit.

What Does Ken Jennings’s Wife Do for a Living?
Mindy and Ken Jennings got married in 2000, the same year Ken graduated from college. Mindy Jennings used to work as a preschool teacher. Currently, we do not have any specific information about her activities. The couple has two kids, so it’s safe to assume both Mindy and Ken spend a lot of their time at home, raising their children.
What Is Ken Jennings’s Net Worth?
Ever since Ken Jennings became a regular host of Jeopardy!, he is said to be making upwards of $1 million for his work on the show. Some sources say his salary per episode is $10,000, and his annual income is $1.4 million. It’s hard to say how true that is, given we don’t actually have any reliable sources to check with.
Regarding his alleged net worth, the figure you can find online is $12 million. Once again, it is difficult to tell how accurate that number is. The figure is based on some of his recent purchases, his cars, and the estimated value of his properties.
Wrapping It Up

Though Jeopardy! helped jumpstart his career as a trivia influencer and enthusiast, it is not his only source of income.
