When Will the New Jeopardy! Season Start?
First things first: if you’re wondering when you can catch the start of the Jeopardy! season, we’ve got some bad news for you, because the newest Jeopardy! season has actually already started! That’s right, we’re almost two whole months into season 39 at this point. Jeopardy! takes some time off from airing new episodes for approximately six weeks every year, usually from late July to September.
The first episode of this season of Jeopardy! premiered on Monday, September 12, 2022, and it is currently slated to finish on Friday, July 28, 2023. Barring some sort of national emergency—season 36 was cut about a month short due to a lack of filming during the early pandemic—this plan should hold, but you never know in this day and age! Luckily, Jeopardy! films many months in advance (more on that down below), so there will almost surely be a backlog of new episodes yet to air in the case of an unforeseen event.

If you missed the start of the season and you want to catch up on the episodes you’ve missed (good luck, because you’ve missed over 8 Sundays’ worth of episodes at this point), there are several options for streaming services where you can catch up. We highlight these services in this section (entitled “How Can I Stream Jeopardy Reruns?”) of our previous article, “6 Reasons Why Jeopardy Is Not On Tonight.” Check them out and see which service best fits your budget and streaming needs—there’s sure to be one that’s accessible to you. And, as always, you can consult the official Jeopardy! website for video clips and articles about the highlights from recent episodes.
How Long Is the New Jeopardy! Season?
How long will this new Jeopardy! season last, exactly? In short, it’ll go on for approximately ten and a half months. That’s a lot of Jeopardy!
Like the majority of recent Jeopardy! seasons, the current season began in mid-September (Monday, September 12, 2022, to be exact) and will wrap up in late July of the following year. It’ll last for 46 weeks, just like it does each year, give or take. The show films about 230 episodes per season, which is 46 times the five weekdays that it airs. In other words, you have a large portion of the year during which to enjoy that sweet, new Jeopardy! content.
Following this schedule, the current Jeopardy! season is slotted to finish up on Friday, July 28, 2023. That means you’ve got months and months left to sop up all that new Jeopardy! goodness before another major hiatus begins. Score!
When Are New Episodes Aired?
So, when exactly can you watch Jeopardy!? As far as time of day goes, the fabled quiz show airs at variable hours. This is because local listings dictate Jeopardy!’s programming; there isn’t a standardized national time that it comes on the TV.
Jeopardy! airs on a myriad of channels in different areas, from NBC to CBS and ABC to the Game Show Network. It depends on your local cable listings as to which one of these you’ll be able to watch the show on. Check your television guide to see exactly when Jeopardy! will be on. Usually, the show airs ahead of primetime listings, so it’ll be on in the late afternoon or early evening. This is often between 4:30 and 7:30 PM.
It’s a little annoying that there’s no universal set time for Jeopardy! to air, but that’s the way it goes with pre-primetime television. Jeopardy! is like the local news in this way—just as familiar and ubiquitous, but also just as subject to local changes.
As for days of the week that the show airs, it’s available to watch Monday through Friday. You won’t be able to find new episodes of the show on weekend days, although occasionally reruns of the show will air on Saturdays and Sundays.
The show is syndicated, so plenty of the episodes are aired as reruns as the year goes on. You’ll probably catch an old episode or two if you keep the Game Show Network on in the background as you go about your day.
When Are New Jeopardy! Episodes Taped?
New Jeopardy! episodes are filmed sporadically throughout the year. The show will have blocks of filming weeks followed by break weeks instead of filming all at once. After all, filming 230 episodes in one go would be quite an ordeal!
One thing that doesn’t vary much between filming days is the filming time. Contestants must make their way to the Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California at the crack of dawn to get an early start on filming. Better wake up that brain, stat!
And here’s another fun fact about the creation of Jeopardy!: several episodes of the show are taped on each filming day. That’s right, the recurring contestants don’t get time to rest their brains for the night between each episode. Instead, each player brings several shirts to the studios each day in the case of some big wins—that way, they’ll go backstage to change their clothes before appearing behind the podium once more.

According to the Jeopardy! website, the show films five episodes per day at the studio, so they tape new episodes for 46 days of each year. Considering how long the Jeopardy! season lasts, that’s quite the efficient timeline.
Some contestants from past seasons have reported that filming only takes place on two days every week. Traditionally, these two days were Tuesday and Wednesday—apparently, that’s when Alex Trebek preferred to film! However, it’s unclear whether this filming method continued after the shake-up of the pandemic, followed by Trebek’s passing. Though Jeopardy! has shifted back to its longer seasons after the cancellations and delays during that uncertain time, only time (and future contestant interviews) will tell as to when and how often the new episodes are filmed.
Regardless, there’s a delay of several months from when new episodes are filmed to when they are released to the public. Usually, this is a two- or three-month delay, but it depends on the year’s filming schedule as to exactly how long that delay is.
TL; DR: Jeopardy! is filmed in bulk throughout the year, with several episodes being taped on a single day in Culver City. If you want to learn more about the ins and outs of Jeopardy!’s filming process, we’ve got an article written by a past contestant for you right here. Better yet, become a contestant yourself and report back to us about all you’ve learned from the filming process!
What Dates Will Special Tournaments Air?
There’s one exception to Jeopardy! airing exclusively on weekdays: special episodes will sometimes air on weekend days. It depends on the special episode or series as to exactly when special tournaments will be on your television.
For example, so far this fall, a new Primetime Celebrity Jeopardy! episode has aired every Sunday since September 25. (If you want to catch up on Celebrity Jeopardy!, it’s available for streaming on Hulu now!). You’ve got quite a few chances left to catch the second half of this series on Sundays at 8 Eastern Standard Time. If you miss it, each episode airs again at 8 Pacific Standard Time the same night. It’ll continue until January 15, 2023, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy the fun of this special and unique take on Jeopardy!.
Though Jeopardy! has aired special celebrity editions of the show for years and year, this is the first time that Celebrity Jeopardy! has been its own series independent of the show. In other words, normal Jeopardy! is still airing at this time; the show hasn’t taken a break to solely accommodate its celebrity-centric spinoff.
Other special tournaments in past years have included the Jeopardy! National College Championship and Jeopardy!: The Greatest of All Time. Both of these series have wrapped up, but we can look to their airdates and times to predict when special episodes will come on TV in the future. These took the place of Jeopardy! providing a respite from the regular show for a short time during their runs.
Unlike Primetime Celebrity Jeopardy!, the Jeopardy! National College Championship did not air on Sundays. Instead, it aired on weeknights. Each episode was an hour long, and came on between 8 and 9 PM Eastern Standard Time. It lasted about two weeks from start to finish.
Jeopardy!: The Greatest of All Time followed a path similar to that of Celebrity Jeopardy!, although it aired over four consecutive days instead of once a week for 13 weeks. It was on TV during primetime hours, meaning that it ran independently of Jeopardy!’s regular time slot.
Jeopardy!’s showrunners love their special tournaments, so anticipate plenty more in the coming years.
