It’s been a while since we’ve seen a brand-new episode of Jeopardy! on TV. Starting the end of July, we’ve only been seeing old episodes of the show. Die-hard fans of Jeopardy! will agree that it’s getting a little boring. When will we get a new episode? And, why are we only seeing reruns on TV? Let’s look into it together.
Why Is Jeopardy! a Rerun Today?
There are several issues that could affect the production of Jeopardy!. At the moment, it appears that Jeopardy! will continue to show reruns until the beginning of September, when the new season airs. Because the studio has been busy with the new season’s production, it is not ready to air it just yet. Besides, new television show seasons tend to debut in September, around the time kids return to school. Working on two seasons at the same time is too difficult.
Why Are There Repeats on Jeopardy!?
If you enjoy watching TV, you will find that many shows show reruns once in a while. Thus, it’s not an issue pertaining to Jeopardy! only but, rather, a global trend. Several reasons contribute to your favorite television game show showing reruns.
As is the case with Jeopardy! right now, the production company might be working on a new season. They have run out of new episodes from the previous season to show, but the new season is due to air in a couple of weeks. What do they do to fill their time slot on TV? They show repeats! It’s not much of a problem for the broadcaster, as people still watch. Fans of the show may even enjoy reruns because of the nostalgia they bring. Plus, if you don’t tell anyone that it’s a rerun, you can impress your loved ones with how well you know the answer to all the questions!
Another issue that the whole world was facing not a long time ago was the coronavirus pandemic. The show had to stop filming during the pandemic to avoid the spread of the virus. Other global events like wars and natural disasters may have an effect on the production of your favorite television programs.
When Is Jeopardy!’s Next Season? When Do New Episodes Air?
The good news is, Jeopardy! is working on a new season that is due to premiere on the 12th of September. In just a month, you will be able to watch new episodes of your favorite game show on TV again! Season 39 will bring with it our beloved hosts Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik. The two hosts will make appearances on that famous stage throughout the season. Just think about it: while we’re fantasizing about the new season, it’s already in the works!
When Are There Only Reruns?
Sometimes TV channels only show reruns of our favorite shows. That usually happens when the show has reached its conclusion, and there are no new episodes in the making. When a studio decides to make some extra money, they can give their old episodes to TV channels to broadcast. The channel will pay a fee to be able to do that. In turn, they can become the only channel on television airing the show for the time being.
What About Syndication?
A studio can decide to offer their show to a different TV network than the one the show was originally made for (or purchased by). In this case, the reruns of a show will be shown on a different channel. A show can also be purchased by one of the popular streaming services that have essentially replaced television. In the case of syndication, the production company gets paid by the network or streaming service.
Why Is Jeopardy! Preempted?
Shows can be preempted to make space for a more important show, event, or piece of news. This technique is often used to allow live sporting events to air. Ultimately, the producer has the final say about whether to preempt a show or not. If, for example, the producer wants to share a piece of breaking news with the world before their competitors get to do so, they can choose to stop the show that’s running and switch to news instead.
Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune were preempted on Friday, April 29th, 2022 because of the NFL Draft that had to air on the same day. The shows then aired at night on Saturday, only a few hours later.
Final Words
The fact that Jeopardy! is showing reruns until the end of the summer is not a bad thing–no need to stress about a cancellation. On the contrary, the studio is preparing us for a new season, and I couldn’t be more excited! Hopefully, we will get to see some familiar faces, as well as new contestants, unique clues, and question categories we never heard of before.

We are receiving two Jeopardy shows. 0ne at 3a;30 and another at 4:30. Are both shows reruns or is one of them a live show? Both are hosted by Ken, which adds to the confusion.
