Everybody knows HQ Trivia, an internet sensation that started in 2017. The trivia app offers live trivia quizzes for people living in North America. The app itself is available all over the world, with some exceptions. HQ Trivia became widely popular when it first came out, followed by a rapid decline that led to the cancelation of live trivia games by HQ Trivia in 2020. That period was brief, and after a break, you could say HQ got an “extra life” and the games resumed. In HQ Trivia, players can win actual cash that they have to split with all the winners.
You probably already knew all of that! But what the heck is HQ Words? Let’s find out.
What is HQ Words?
In 2018, when HQ Trivia started facing dwindling numbers for the first time, it launched HQ Words in an effort to attract players back to the app. HQ Words is a Wheel of Fortune-style game where players compete to solve word puzzles. The game is played in the form of a live crossword puzzle. There are ten rounds in one game.
This extension of HQ Trivia followed the tragic death of the co-founder and CEO of the company, Colin Kroll. Rus Yusupov, the other co-founder, had high hopes for HQ Words. Unfortunately, it did not live up to its expectations.
How to Play HQ Words?
HQ Words runs inside the HQ Trivia app, so you don’t need to download another app to play. The game invites you to solve word puzzles in real time by guessing hidden letters. The order in which you click the letters does not matter; as long as the letter belongs in the word, you’re golden. You can only type two incorrect letters before you are eliminated from the game.
Spin the wheel in the beginning to get random letters from the word revealed. Just like in HQ Trivia, each game consists of ten rounds. If you want to win, you have to guess all ten words correctly. If you’re thinking, “Why can’t I play HQ Words?” you probably opened the app on the wrong day. The live HQ Words quiz is on every Wednesday!
What’s the Difference Between HQ Words and HQ Trivia?
The CEO of HQ Trivia hoped to attract a wider audience with HQ Words. The thing is that you don’t need to be knowledgeable in trivia to be able to guess words with hints. That was the hope, anyway. The two games turned out to be rather similar.
HQ Trivia is a live trivia game where players have to answer multiple-choice style questions. HQ Words is a live crossword puzzle with hints. The latter is more “interactive,” as you have to manually click every letter. In HQ Trivia, many players end up choosing the correct answer within the first few seconds, and sitting around and waiting for the next question. Overall, the games are not too different, even though HQ Words was meant to appeal to a broader audience.
How Often Can You Play Each?
The HQ Words quiz is on every Wednesday at 9 PM ET. HQ Trivia is a daily live quiz that is on at 9 PM ET. You can play HQ Trivia every day!
