HQ Trivia is an addictive game. This really shouldn’t come as a surprise seeing as how many people love trivia, especially trivia that gives you real-world money for winning without having to pay a dime for the experience. In order to further the experience—and in order to get more people playing the game—the clever folks on the dev team have come up with strategies to get players to talk about the game with their friends and hopefully get them involved. One such strategy—and arguably the main strategy—revolves around referral codes.
What are HQ Referral Codes?
A referral code is a very simple system. Your referral code is your username on the game. This makes it much easier to spread with your friends and family—and even other potential players online—than a system that requires remembering a complex code or string of characters that mean nothing to you. This does, however, mean you should pick your username wisely as you don’t want to be telling your parents when trying to get them to sign up that your name is something more than a little inappropriate!
What Can You Use Referral Codes For?
Referral codes have one use on HQ Trivia. They get you a valuable extra life that will be used in one of the quizzes that you play. The way this works is that when any new player uses your referral code when signing up you will get a free extra life as soon as they play their first game on the app. (We also have a whole article about all the ways you can get extra lives and how they work.)
Given that a single extra life costs around $4 from the HQ Trivia Shop when bought separately—this can be brought down to around $1.30 when they are purchased in bulk—then it becomes pretty clear that having a referral code (and getting out there for people to use) is a pretty valuable part of the game and system.
How Can You Get A Referral Code?
Your own referral code—the one you will want to be passing out—is your username. Simple. If, however, you are new to the game and don’t know any other players but still want to be cool and get someone an extra life, then there are pages on the internet—specifically on Reddit or by joining a Discord server—that are dedicated to people posting their usernames.
If you are going to go down this route, also noting it will be a good idea for you to add your name to these threads just in case, then we would suggest picking a more recent username to use as your referral. This person has a much greater chance of still being active within the community than someone who posted their name before the revamp of the game for example, and thus the chances of problem such as their referral code is broken or referral code didn’t give life is much smaller.
Referral Code Not Working? Try This…
You really shouldn’t have any issues with adding and entering a referral code. To say any system is perfect is false, but this one is pretty much foolproof. One mistake that can always be made is entering a name wrong or misspelling a word, so be sure to double and triple check before you add in the player you are giving a referral to or when you post your username online. There is no use in 10 people trying to get you extra lives if you missed an ‘s’ off the end of your username, for example.
If you do have referral code issues and perhaps you get a message saying “something went wrong, we were unable to add your referral” and you have triple-checked the spelling already, then the best move is to contact support and see what is going on.
Can You Add More than One Referral Code?
Simply put, the answer to this question is no. You can only add one referral code when you sign up and anyone you are getting to sign up can also use your code just once for one extra life. If the question, however, is how to add a referral code after signing up? Then that is possible. The way to do this varies between iOS and Android, but it involves getting to the ‘Referral Code’ box and entering the username of your referral. It is a simple process and it ensures that anyone that failed to remember to add a referral code at the point of joining the game—likely because they are so ready to get going—can still reap the rewards after signup.
The referral code system within HQ Trivia is one that you should try to maximize if you play the game even at a very casual level. An extra life is such a big boost for the small amount of work that it takes to get your code spread around the internet—and with friends—that it is important to know the answer to questions like “where do you put the referral code?” if you are ever asked. The more people you know, the more friends you connect with the game, and the better your use of social media, the more you will benefit here and increase the fun of HQ Trivia by working with the system to give yourself a better shot of winning for free. Plus, the more people that play, the more chance that their increased revenue stream could lead to bigger prizes—and that’s just a win for everyone!
