When you say trivia board game, the vast majority will think of Trivial Pursuit. And no wonder! The game has been with us since the 1980s. That means that your parents and even your grandparents were there to see the iconic game grow and gain popularity. If you grew up playing Trivial Pursuit on the weekends and got a few games of your own from your parents, you can understand just how important this game is to the world of trivia.
Traditionally, board games were always regarded as fun for the whole family. As this market continues to grow and change, you will easily find games that are more suitable for young people, as well as games that are meant for kids. However, the initial idea was to bring the whole family together, from the oldest to the youngest members, and entertain everyone for an hour or two. It is a bonding experience and pure, innocent fun. If Trivial Pursuit was not your family’s jam growing up, then perhaps you are familiar with Monopoly or Scrabble.
Today, we would like to honor this long-standing tradition. We gathered a list of some of the best Trivial Pursuit versions to play with family. You can expect to see the Family Edition, as it is quite literally meant for families. There will be others that you might find rather unexpected! My favorite one, for instance, is the Trivial Pursuit Best of Genus Edition. It offers great value for money, as it comes with a game board and all the necessary parts. If you know Trivial Pursuit, you probably know that Genus is widely considered to be the best series. Now, imagine combining all the Genus games and taking only the very best questions from each edition. That’s what Best of Genus is! Everyone in the family is guaranteed to enjoy this one. And if you’re looking for something different, then keep on reading.
Trivial Pursuit Best of Genus Edition
Rating: 5/5
If you’ve familiar with the different editions of Trivial Pursuit, then you definitely know Genus. Genus is widely considered to be the best version of Trivial Pursuit. It is one of the most challenging, it has some of the most interesting questions, and it is usually meant for a mature audience. Because of that, it was never really considered a game for the whole family. However, this Trivial Pursuit Best of Genus Edition just might be!
The game combines some of the best questions from Genus Editions 1-6. It is still not suitable for the youngest kids, but children from the age of 12 can finally join in on the fun. You can have as many as 36 players at the same time, and you need at least two to play. There are 2,400 questions overall, so it will take a while before the game starts to get boring. The best part about this edition is the quality of questions. You know that you are getting the very best of Trivial Pursuit when the game has questions from the past 25 years!
People like this game because of the great variety of questions and topics. You will find everything from History to Entertainment in this collection. Some of the questions might be outdated, as it goes with the older versions of Trivial Pursuit. You can easily combat this issue by playing in teams. Make sure every pair or team has a child and an adult, so that they can complement each other. I wouldn’t recommend this game as your introduction to the world of Trivial Pursuit. It works better as an addition to an already existing collection. Only players that played the original Genus can appreciate Trivial Pursuit Best of Genus Edition for what it really is.
- For 2 to 36 Players
- Great for Ages 12 and Up!
- The Best Questions from the Past 25 Years!
- 2,400 of the Very Best Questions from Genus 1-6!
- Sample Question: What barnyard animals are prone to sunburn? Pig
Trivial Pursuit: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Edition
Rating: 5/5
Who doesn’t love Harry Potter? Even though the iconic movie franchise was developed for the generation of millennials, today’s kids can still enjoy it. Besides, you don’t need to be a hardcore Harry Potter fan to answer a few questions about the movies. As a result, Harry Potter games are almost always fun for the whole family!
Trivial Pursuit: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Edition is a compact game, so it doesn’t come with a board. Instead, you can test your Harry Potter knowledge with a small set of 600 questions. Even though there is no board, the game still includes a small die. The portability of the game makes it perfect for road trips and vacations overseas. You can play in a car, on a plane, in a hotel, at a camp site, and so on. The cards come in a neat wedge-shaped container. There are 6 categories that all the questions are split into: The Dark Arts, Hogwarts, Magical Spells and Potions, Magical Objects, Magical People, and Animals and Magical Creatures.
The game is suitable for players from the age of 8. You only need two players to play this game. The gameplay works the same way as in any other version of Trivial Pursuit, minus the game board. It is also significantly quicker, so you can play more games in a short period of time. To win the game, you need to collect six cards, which is the equivalent of answering 12 questions correctly.
Keep in mind that Trivial Pursuit was only able to obtain the license to the Harry Potter movies and not the books, so the questions are based on the movies only. Another thing to remember is that this is only a deck of question cards with a die; you will not find a game board attached to this set. Some people think that this game is not worth it, when you can buy a full game set (with a game board) for a little more than double the price. I disagree! I think this is an excellent set for someone who is just getting into board games and doesn’t want to overwhelm themselves. Besides, if you know that your kids don’t like to sit still for long periods of time, maybe a quicker game would be more fun for them.
The questions are the perfect amount of challenging. Anyone who has seen the movies at least once will be able to play. Even though the age range says 8+, I would recommend Trivial Pursuit: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Edition to older kids. Overall, it is a great game for a family of Harry Potter lovers!

The unique selling point of this game is that it has two decks of cards—one for kids and one for adults. This way neither age group can get bored or misunderstand their questions. As for the kids’ questions, many of them are concerned with pop culture. That makes the game a bit less educational and a lot more entertaining.

The generation that grew up watching the iconic sitcom will love this one! Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have at least heard of Friends. Friends is a hugely successful TV series that first started running in 1994. The commercial success of the venture had a massive effect on the actors that played the main characters, making them actual Hollywood stars. Most of them went on to participate in other successful projects in the film industry.
Even if you’re not the biggest fan of Friends, I would bet you’ve seen an episode or two. Some of us grew up with the show, while others found their way to it years later as adults. Friends can only be compared to other iconic shows like Seinfeld or Modern Family.
Trivial Pursuit Friends Edition is great because it has a topic, but it’s not too niche. All your family members will be able to play the game even if they haven’t seen every single episode of the show. The game is suitable for players from the age of 12, so children are welcome to join for a few rounds. Of course, if there is someone in your family who has not seen a single episode, they would not enjoy the game very much, so keep that in mind. The game is ideal for a family of Friends lovers.
This is a small bite-size edition with only 600 questions and no game board. That makes it perfect for traveling and playing on the go. It is also great for children who have a short attention span and don’t want to sit around a table for hours playing the same old board game. The gameplay is rather fast-paced, making the average game only around 30 minutes long. You only need two players to play, but the more the merrier.
The gameplay is very simple. Take turns answering questions about the TV show. The person that’s first to answer 12 questions right or collect six cards wins. Some people might be disappointed by the lack of a game board, but I prefer it. I think this is a better option for kids who don’t want to focus too much on the board element. [amazon link=”B07VXR4W5B” title=”Trivial Pursuit Friends Edition” is also a great game to play with friends and bring to parties.
Buying Guide
When buying a Trivial Pursuit game to play with your family, there are a few things you need to consider. Let’s start with the obvious one—the youngest player’s age. The Family Edition and the Harry Potter Edition are suitable for players from the age of 8. The other two can be played from the age of 12. Think about how old your players are.
At the same time, you shouldn’t neglect the older players. If you have some players that are not familiar with modern entertainment like Friends and Harry Potter, you should opt for one of the other two options. That also works for people who simply don’t enjoy television. I, for example, am not the biggest fan of Friends, so I wouldn’t particularly enjoy playing the Friends Edition, even though I’ve seen all of the episodes multiple times.
Finally, think about the gaming experience that you are looking for. Would you rather play a full game with a board and all the necessary elements? Or perhaps you prefer to just play with question cards? The Best of Genus Edition offers the best value for money, as it has the largest number of questions. It will take a while before you start to see repeat questions. The Family Edition has half of the amount of questions, but it’s still pretty good. The remaining two only have 600 questions in each kit.
Final Words
Whatever you go with, you can rest assured that your family game night will be unforgettable. All of the aforementioned games will make great stocking stuffers on Christmas and birthday presents for your kids. Add one of these games to your collection to have another reason to spend some time with the family.
